Repeat drunk driving offender causes fatal accident in Tennessee

Loss of life in any car accident is devastating. However, that devastation is made all the more apparent when the accident comes as a result of a temporary lapse in judgment made by another driver. Recently, an 89-year-old man lost his life on a Tennessee roadway, allegedly due to one woman’s drunk driving.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 42-year-old woman was headed southbound in an SUV when she crossed the center line and struck the elderly man’s pickup truck head on. The woman was traveling with a 3-year-old child. Both she and the child were transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

Following the accident, the woman was charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain a driving lane and failure to exercise due care. According to the news reports, the woman is now facing her third drunk driving charge. While there is currently no indication of pending additional charges relating to the elderly man’s death, it is possible additional charges will be forthcoming given the severe nature of the accident.

Everyone makes poor choices and choices have consequences. Facing multiple drunk driving charges is difficult under any circumstance, but every individual accused of a crime in our state has certain basic protections that must be honored. However, facing charges following a tragic accident can cause emotions to run high.

Thankfully, repeat offenders do have options for protecting their rights and their freedom following DUI charges; seeking the aid of a qualified legal representative may be the best chance of an alleged DUI offender has for building a solid drunk driving defense that will prove successful in the court room. Those facing DUI charges owe it to themselves and their futures to seek the best help possible.
